Making a Research Proposal
Making a Research ProposalIf you are in the research phase of your education, this may be your last chance to come up with a proper research proposal. With no time, money, or energy left to do more advanced work, you must make a decision as to which proposal to give. Some research proposals will not be suitable for students who have had little experience in academic writing and presentation. The first step that you should take is to come up with a good research proposal. In order to do this, you must have a well-thought out idea about the kind of research that you would like to do. Even if you can formulate an outline of what you want to accomplish, it is still a good idea to make some notes about the major parts of the project. You must also determine the level of difficulty. For example, if you know that the main objective of your project will be to examine how people with ADHD react to life, you must plan accordingly.Research proposals must include a strong research methodology and a plan for data collection. Some students are intimidated by the idea of collecting their own data because they don't know how. This is important because it shows that you have a sense of how much time you will need to devote to your project. After your research proposal is complete, you must turn it into a data collection plan. If your project will be using the Internet, you must provide an online website. In order to collect data, you must take several steps. In order to collect the required data for your research proposal, you must use your own computer in order to conduct your research. By doing this, you can analyze what has been done by other individuals on the Internet. In other words, you will be able to see if there are any trends in the subject matter that you wish to investigate. The research pr oposal service can help you get an idea as to how many articles you will need to publish in order to have a chance of getting published in a special publication. When writing an article for publication, the first thing that you should do is to find an article database. The different emphasis placed by different societies about several goals and priorities to answer the three key economic questions has lead to the evolvement of four different economics systems which i will critically analyse in this assignment. Furthermore, i will be critically discussing South Africa as a mixed economy as to why it is characterized as a mixed economy and the suitability of the economic system for the current economic conditions. ââ¬Å"A government is not need to ensure the whole societyââ¬â¢s welll-beingâ⬠Adman Smith. 2.LITERARY REVIEW OF THE FOUR ECONOMIC SYSTEMS 2.1. Debunking the American Dream free essay sample
Robertson, Kristen English 103 sec 4027 March 16, 2011 Debunking the American Dream ââ¬Å"For unto everyone that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance. But from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. â⬠ââ¬â Matthew 25:29. Malcolm Gladwell uses this scripture from the gospel of Matthew to introduce the phenomenon of the ââ¬Å"Matthew Effectâ⬠in his book, Outliers. He defines an ââ¬Å"outlierâ⬠as ââ¬Å"men and women who do things out of the ordinaryâ⬠(Gladwell 17). In his search of trying to find what exactly made these men and women so extraordinary, he discovered that they all had an ââ¬Å"accumulative advantageâ⬠over their counterparts. That, there was no amount of hard work, intelligence, knowledge, or gift that could make someone extremely successful. That, the Bill Gates, John Rockefellers and Henry Fordââ¬â¢s of our society are not simply just a product of hard work, but rather the result of when hard work meets opportunity under incredibly unusual circumstances. In a way, Gladwell debunks the American Dream. He insists that no matter how hard we try, how much we know, how smart we are, that without the added benefit of some type of fateful chance encounter, we will never be an outlier. Gladwell illustrates this concept in several ways. He begins with the examination of the success of Canadian Hockey players. Psychologist Roger Barnsley first noted the large effect the playersââ¬â¢ birth dates had to do with their success. Upon looking at a roster, he noticed most of the players were born in the first quarter of the year. While this seemed coincidental to some, and even went unnoticed in most, Barnsley was able to detect the link between the players birthday, in relation to the leagues cut-off date, of January 1. This meant that the players born in the first quarter of the year were almost a full year older than their teammates. This age difference leads to an advantage in physical maturity, which later leads to being picked for better teams, which then leads to better coaching and teammates, on teams that practice and play almost three times as much. Collectively, these factors formulate the perfect scenario to produce the best players. This seemingly unimportant contrast in birthdays turns out to actually be a significant disparity. Its not that the players of the Canadian Hockey League born in January, February, or March started out with some inherent gift of athleticism but rather an innate advantage in their date of birth. Gladwell also notes the significance in date of birth in relation to school. Students born close to the cut-off date are older than their classmates, therefore making them more mentally mature, and in turn, better students. So the students born towards the end of their schools cut-off date, are less mentally mature, and worse students- the dumb getting dumber. This, according to Gladwell, is the ââ¬Å"Matthew Effectâ⬠, named after verse 25:29 in the gospel of Matthew. The rich get richer, or in this case, the older boys become the better athletes. ââ¬Å"It is those who are successful, in other words, who are most likely to be given the kinds of special opportunities that lead to further success. Itââ¬â¢s the rich who get the biggest tax breaks. Itââ¬â¢s the best students who get the best teaching and most attention. And itââ¬â¢s the biggest nine- and ten-year-olds who get the most coaching and practice. Success is what most sociologists like to call ââ¬Å"accumulative advantageâ⬠(Gladwell 30). The ââ¬Å"Matthew Effectâ⬠can be seen in all aspects of society. It is especially true in the entertainment industry. Fame breeds more fame which leads to riches and more riches. Oftentimes, its not about the talent in a celebrity, but simply their name that begets favoritism, endorsements, status, jobs, etc. A famous actor will be chosen for a role simply because of who they are. This same actor or actress will then become even more famous, after millions of people watch their movie. They then get endorsements in everything from perfume to food products. Banking on their fame, celebrities will then be given designer clothes and the latest gadgets, allowed to stay at exquisite resorts, shipped the newest craze, all at no cost, in hopes of making their latest invention or design fashionable or trendy; a multi-billionaire being given clothes, shoes, food and shelter! This is the ââ¬Å"Matthew Effectâ⬠at its finest- the rich definitely getting richer. To the adverse, the poor get poorer. ââ¬Å"Consider the practice of assigning wage and salary increases based on across-the-board percentages. Suppose that a secretary making $20,000 per year and an executive making $200,000 per year both receive a 5% increase for three successive years. While they receive an equal rate of increase, the secretarys salary over three years has increased by $3,153. The executives salary, meanwhile, has increased by $31,153, larger than the secretarys entire annual salary (Rigney 108). So, while we all love the rags to riches story of success, admire those that are ââ¬Å"self-madeâ⬠, and cling to possibility that we too can rise from nothing, according to Gladwell, we may all be hanging onto just a figment of our imagination. In his eyes the ââ¬Å"American Dreamâ⬠simply doesnââ¬â¢t exist. We donââ¬â¢t just rise from nothing to become something. We must be at the mercy of some incredible circumstance to even embark on the journey to success.

(Lessem 359). IKEA stands as model that the creation of transnational corporate culture and identity is possible and the replica selected by IKEA for establishing its transnational corporate identify has been however condemned since it is more heavily relied towards Swedish national culture. It is to be noted that the simple transnationalisation of a Swedish culture around the world might be followed by a significant losses to corporateââ¬â¢s flexibility and as well as creativity. I t is rather surprising that the overwhelming success of IKEAââ¬â¢s strategy which means one-directional conveyance of the Swedish management technique to assimilate into other cultural atmosphere like UAE. It really connotes that IKEAââ¬â¢s values specifically vulnerable to cultural convergence and transnationalisation since they symbolise significant values of our present times and globalised world. (Mann Gotz 307). To remain successful in USA, IKEA was compelled to make transformations to the idea that had earlier worked well in Europe and Asia including UAE. In 1985, IKEA entered into the American market. In 1988, IKEA witnessed a steel fall in its sales in USA in alarming proportion. It was evident that some features of the IKEA ideology were not appreciated or understood by Americans. To adjust the IKEA culture with that of American culture, IKEA has to undertake major transformations in its cultural ideology. Though it was a novel experience for IKEA, it has been compel led to introduce some proper cultural fine tunings in other nations also including UAE. Though, the salient structure of IKEA cultural ideology remained unchanged, some fine-tuning was needed to Americanise the concept. Due to this, IKEA penetration into the US market progressed up astonishingly. (Edvardsson Enquist 2008:89). About 20,000 new employees are being recruited by IKEA on yearly basis. All of these new employees are appointed at the national level and there has been much transfer between various nationsââ¬â¢ operations. IKEA is of the strong view that diversity offers a more demanding business. (Edvardsson Enquist 89). Appropriate staff recruitment at the store level at UAE has been regarded as a cornerstone and specific attention is paid to experience in retailing and a service-oriented attitude of the new recruits and if they lack specific skills, adequate training is being given to them that will suit the cultural diversity of UAE. When interviewed the managers of various IKEA stores across the globe including UAE, they observed that the key role played by the IKEA culture is one of the strong factors of success. (Edvardsson Enquist 91). The style in which IKEA sells furniture through Swidishness or Swidishness through its furniture is the best illustration of the style that present globalisation encourages the commoditification of the cultural difference. (Radway Janice 1994: 206) It is to be observed that as societies integrate culturally, they become more diverse in many aspects. For instance, IKEA has brought Swedish design to UAE co-existing with UAE design. (Collier Dollar 15). IKEA has built a vibrant corporate culture footed on some key values of the companyââ¬â¢s founder which are fundamentally the same in every nation in which IKEA do business. IKEAââ¬â¢s style of management has a universal appeal. IKEA employed a global style of management which maintained a ââ¬Å"Swedish Flavour ââ¬Å"which is in consonance with their own corporate practices which have an edge over other styles of management. IKEA employs pioneering workplace efforts to corroborate its inclusive viewpoint like ââ¬Å"pancakes with store manager ââ¬Å"gatherings where co-employees have a chance to exchange their view in an open forum. For supervisors and managers, IKEA is having in place mandatory value workshops in regular phase. In IKEA, diversity is being ensured and also celebrated and the every employees are asked to rate the managerial skills of IKEAs managers and their rating will be used in their salary review. Recommendation Tools for Managing Diversity Empowerment Diversity exists in a business organisation when there exists varied cultural, demographic and personal differences among the employees who work there and the customers who receive services or products from there. (William 2005:395). Diversity refers to characteristics of individuals that mould their identities and their experience in the workplace. Diversity refers to the magnitude of variances among members of an organisation or a group. In many ways, people are diverse. Within the workforce, people differ in their ethnicity /race, gender, religion, ability and age. There also exists differences in their sexual , military status , values ,expectations , socioeconomic status , lifestyle , work style , and position or function within the organisation .( Lussier 2006:242_. Keys (1995) emphasises that through empowerment of employees a business can achieve organisational process and can attain an excellent quality service. Further, TQM spotlights on managing the whole organisation to yield quality to customers and significant ingredients include employee empowerment, client satisfaction and continuous enhancement in customer satisfaction. ( Kirst ââ¬âAshman Hull 167). Diversity Training Programs IKEAââ¬â¢s dedication to the ever prolonging development of its employees was mirrored in the IKEAââ¬â¢s policies on development and tr aining of its employees. The company is having in place a wide-ranging professional and training program to strengthen and promote the advancement of its workforce. Its workforce could make use of many available resources including classroom sessions, books and online instructions to cater their needs in acquiring advanced knowledge or increasing their skills. IKEA is also having specialised training programs in provinces like health, diversity, environmental and safety consciousness. (Pearce 709). Mentoring/Networks Mentoring has been used an important tool of IKEAââ¬â¢s employee knowledge program . IKEA launched a program namely ââ¬Å"partners for growthâ⬠which was a twelve months mentoring effort that teamed IKEAââ¬â¢s junior managers with senior managers from different locations of IKEA. Mentoring is anticipated to train and prepare junior managers for the top positions in the future and to assist IKEA to cater its needs in coming years. (Pearce 709). Summary IKEA i ntends to have a workforce that mirrors the diversity of a neighbourhood. For instance , IKEA store in Atlanta has a mixed workforce which includes Asians , whites , Hispanics and African ââ¬âAmericans. Its stores office in Atlanta also does have a diversified workforce as logistic manager of its store is a German whereas its workers include workforce from Denmark , Guyana , Canada and Spain. Thus , diversity in IKEA is one facet that to move around its Swedish roots but at the same juncture acknowledging varied cultures. Thus , IKEA is having a diversified workforce where its entire workforce is called co-workers and its managers are involved in helping the company to market its products towards target customers . IKEA is strongly believing in variety of workforce from varied backgrounds will fortify its organisation setup and thus making their company a really true ,strong , global company. ( Ritzler 2007). Conclusion If one takes into account the lessons learnt by IKEA when t hey globalised their business strategies and by relying on particular theory and research in the gamut of cross cultural diversity it could be concluded that in spite of real globalisation process , cultural differences prolong to divide the globe into provinces and conditions and the possibility of perusing a global style of management and standardisation of products , operating methods and services on the global level. Hence, variances in perceptions, communications and values which make significant to comprehend the nature of host culture and function with local cultural restrictions and behavioural patterns. These issues may make constraints in the fields like product development, marketing, HRM, organisational structures and other management problems. Comprehending behavioural variances is a crucial factor as it defines the style in which organisations do businesses. Hence , international companies like IKEA must assess their business practices to make sure that regional norms in UAE in behavioural characteristics are being given great significance. Thus , IKEA tradition encourages the realisation of every individual potentiality and respecting everyoneââ¬â¢s diversity and IKEA visualises this as an integral aspect of its competitive advantage. Recruitment strategy of IKEA relies heavily on values and diversity and not on its earlier retail practices. IKEAââ¬â¢s dedication to diversity is corroborated by the fact that it offers translations for non-English applicants both during the recruitment phases and during the induction phases and IKEAââ¬â¢S workplace slogan is ââ¬Å" dare to be you.â⬠Thus , IKEAââ¬â¢s rational cultural diversity and workplace efforts have assisted to maintain the lower labour turnover rate in the industry and it also helps to increase its performance and profitability year after year. The Importance of the Central Limit Theorem
The Importance of the Central Limit Theorem The central limit theorem is a result from probability theory. This theorem shows up in a number of places in the field of statistics. Although the central limit theorem can seem abstract and devoid of any application, this theorem is actually quite important to the practice of statistics. So what exactly is the importance of the central limit theorem? It all has to do with the distribution of our population. This theorem allows you to simplify problems in statistics by allowing you to work with a distribution that is approximately normal. Statement of the Theorem The statement of the central limit theorem can seem quite technical but can be understood if we think through the following steps. We begin with a simple random sample with n individuals from a population of interest. From this sample, we can easily form a sample mean that corresponds to the mean of what measurement we are curious about in our population. A sampling distribution for the sample mean is produced by repeatedly selecting simple random samples from the same population and of the same size, and then computing the sample mean for each of these samples. These samples are to be thought of as being independent of one another. The central limit theorem concerns the sampling distribution of the sample means. We may ask about the overall shape of the sampling distribution. The central limit theorem says that this sampling distribution is approximately normal- commonly known as a bell curve. This approximation improves as we increase the size of the simple random samples that are used to produce the sampling distribution. There is a very surprising feature concerning the central limit theorem. The astonishing fact is that this theorem says that a normal distribution arises regardless of the initial distribution. Even if our population has a skewed distribution, which occurs when we examine things such as incomes or peopleââ¬â¢s weights, a sampling distribution for a sample with a sufficiently large sample size will be normal. Central Limit Theorem in Practice The unexpected appearance of a normal distribution from a population distribution that is skewed (even quite heavily skewed) has some very important applications in statistical practice. Many practices in statistics, such as those involving hypothesis testing or confidence intervals, make some assumptions concerning the population that the data was obtained from. One assumption that is initially made in a statistics course is that the populations that we work with are normally distributed. The assumption that data is from a normal distribution simplifies mattersà but seems a little unrealistic. Just a little work with some real-world data shows that outliers, ââ¬â¹skewness, multiple peaks and asymmetry show up quite routinely. We can get around the problem of data from a population that is not normal. The use of an appropriate sample size and the central limit theorem help us to get around the problem of data from populations that are not normal. Thus, even though we might not know the shape of the distribution where our data comes from, the central limit theorem says that we can treat the sampling distribution as if it were normal. Of course, in order for the conclusions of the theorem to hold, we do need a sample size that is large enough. Exploratory data analysis can help us to determine how large of a sample is necessary for a given situation.
